I pay attention. I really do. Shame on me for not reading the Daily Howler, well, daily:
We finally have the full information. Yes, Maureen Dowd invented that fake NASCAR quotethe comical quote from pretentious old Kerry. And once Dowd invented the phony quotation, it spread through the great New York Times. It was repeated by Tierney; repeated by Stolberg; repeated by Egan; repeated by Richand Kerry was mocked for his pompous (fake) statement every single time that they did it. Five separate times in the past several months, Kerry was mocked in the Times for his comment. And oh yes, lets repeat thisthe quotation in question was phony. Kerry never made the statement in question. Maureen Dowd simply made the quote up.
According to my search (and I don't have Nexis, so this isn't exhaustive), the phony quote was printed in:
Tallahassee Democrat, Sep. 14, 2004; Nov. 1, 2004
Grand Forks Herald, Oct. 29, 2004
Santa Fe New Mexican, Aug. 27, 2004
Maureen Dowd's syndicated column, March 18-23, 2004
Meanwhile, Mary Beth Cahill is blaming the election loss on the timing of the convention. I blame a campaign that let a false and damaging quote circulate about the candidate for 7 months before correcting the record.
If anyone finds more false quotes, add them to the wiki, or send them to me and I will.
