Republican Senator John Cornyn has introduced legislation to deal with a controversial Supreme Court ruling last week. ... Texas Senator Cornyn is among many who say that ruling is wrong -- and he has introduced legislation which will outlaw such seizures of private property. "As the Houston Chronicle editorialized this past weekend," Cornyn said, "'It seems like a bizarre anomaly. The government in China or Russia might take private property to hand over to wealthy developers to build shopping malls and office plazas, but it wouldn't happen in the United States. Yet that is the practice that the U.S. Supreme Court narrowly approved this week.'" Cornyn says his legislation would clarify government's exercise of its power of eminent domain to that "public use" could not be construed to include economic development.
