Republicans are great at staying on message: repeating the approved talking points, ad nauseum, until they become conventional wisdom and well after they've been entirely refuted. In large part, this is because you need to strictly enforce a consistent message to advance policies that clearly favor the wealthy few over the working many. Case in point: the repeal of the estate tax. The estate tax affects far less than 1 percent of all American families, yet stands as something of a barrier between an American meritocracy and plutocracy. The Republican plan to eliminate the estate tax involved renaming the estate tax the "death tax" and claiming that the estate tax was unfairly burdening small farmers. That the reality of the estate tax differed greatly from the Republican message was of no great matter, so long as the proponents stayed on message.
Minnesota Republican Watch catches Dick Day going badly off message on the state government shutdown. It ain't pretty.
