From the GOP Newsline, an email offering of the Minnesota Republican party:
Quote of the week
Former U.S. Attorney General, and member of Saddam Hussein's legal defense team, Ramsey Clark had this to say about the charges against Hussein,
"Have you seen 'The New York Time' op-ed piece by -- yes, but you haven't seen the evidence. But you know that. If you are going to presume his guilt, then you don't care about a trial. You say, go ahead and first the punishment and then the trial. Join in with Alice in wonderland. I believe in the presumption of innocence." ("The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer," CNN Transcripts, December 6, 2006)
I wonder if Clark has asked Saddam Hussein whether he believed in trials and the presumption of innocence while he was in charge of Iraq.
I don't care what Saddam Hussein believed in while he ruled Iraq. We don't obviate the rule of law just because someone breaks the law. The presumption of innocence does not exist to protect him -- it's there to protect you and me and him and everybody. Regardless of how foul or odious a person you appear to be, the law presumes your innocence because you just might be.
