Go, Diageo, Go

Posted by: Hammer / 3:50 PM

New Diageo poll (PDF is out. A couple notes: only 37% of Americans have an opinion on Jack Abramoff so far. Those with an opinion overwhelmingly view him negatively. As more people learn more about Abramoff, expect to see the corruption gulf to widen. So far, most Americans see corruption as a problem for both parties. This is, of course, true -- any corruption is bad. But between DeLay, Abramoff, and Duke Cunningham, more people who conclude that the Democratic Party is more capable of enacting necessary reforms. No matter how many times (audio) Rep. David Dreier (R-CA) says "reform" to NPR (all within 4 minutes, 28 seconds):

...The Republican party has been and continues to be the party of reform. ...Frankly, when we're done with these reforms, the order of the day will be more reforms. ... Earmarking reform is a very high priority. We want to bring an end to so-called 'pork barrel spending'. ...and I believe that we can reform the earmark process. It's important to note that we've had a $3 billion reduction under the leadership of Congressman Jerry Lewis of the earmarking process just within the last year. ...If you go back to the early 1990s, I had the privilege of co-chairing the joint committee on the organization of Congress and at that time we proposed a wide range of reforms. I was in the minority and the then speaker of the House did not accept any of the reforms that we proposed. We won the majority and we implemented many of them. So, reform has been a high priority at the top of our list for a long period of time, since I was in the minority. We've been in the majority for a decade, we're continuing to pursue it. As I said, when we're done with this reform, the priority will be more reform.

I hope I have time to check up on the $3 billion in reductions in earmarks. It's hard to believe there's been a reduction in earmarks in the year of Stevens bridge to nowhere.

Also, Bush's job approval fell 4 points to 46% last month. People still say they think of Bush as a guy they'd like to have a beer with, but now they mean they'd do anything to keep the guy out of the White House.
