2006, the Immaculate Election?
The vast majority of artists, actors and musicians tend to be Democrats but I've always been bothered, tho not all that surprised, that most pro athletes are Republicans. It's nice to know there are a few NFL players out there who aren't, including one, Heath Shuler, who might be picking up a House seat for us in North Carolina. (Yes, I know Shuler's pro career was not nearly as illustrious as his college career. I'm painfully aware, actually.) Now I find out a much more famous former player is speaking out against the election of one of his former teammates:
Swan may have been a great receiver, but Harris obviously has much better political perception. And the more famous pass reception.Former Pittsburgh Steeler great Franco Harris waited patiently. Then, like a good running back, he took advantage of an opening to give ex-teammate Lynn Swann, the GOP candidate for governor, a good-natured dig.
''Lynn is a great person. He was a great football player,'' Harris said at a recent Democratic congressional fundraiser. ''He's running in the wrong direction.''
The worlds of football and politics have intersected this year in Pennsylvania, where rookie campaigner Swann -- winner of four Super Bowls with the Steelers -- is seeking to unseat Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell, a political veteran.
...
As for Harris, a Democratic activist in Pennsylvania, he supports Rendell and has raised money for the party but tries to stay out of the spotlight.
