Lists are bad

Posted by: Hammer / 1:58 PM

Lists are bad. Were I to make a bad list of bad lists, this would be among the worst. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is promoting a list from that National Association of Recording Merchandisers (whoever they are) of the the "definitive 200" allegedly representing "history’s most influencial [sic] and popular albums".

Not only do the Beatles as a group make the list 5 times, but every member of the Beatles (save Ringo) also makes the list. Led Zeppelin makes the list 5 times as well, but none of Robert Plant's solo work was up to snuff. Genesis doesn't make the list, but Phil Collins does. The Beastie Boys make the list for Licensed to Ill rather than Paul's Boutique. Def Leppard makes the list but Husker Du doesn't. Green Day makes the list twice, but the Replacements are not worthy.

Avril freaking Lavigne makes the list but there's no Dinsoaur Jr., Descendents, ALL, or MTX (or Ramones.

Boys II Men, the Titanic soundtrack, and Barbra Steisand make the list, but Wilco is missing.

I smell a new poll... maybe when Jambo gets back?

Knowing Jambo, a veritable hissy fit will ensue when he finds out Zeppelin tied the Beatles for number of albums on that list. Then there'll be a long rant on the importance of (insert alternative artist here) over (insert inane pop artist here). And he'll forget to mention the Stones because he's just a pop princess who doesn't "get" Exile on Main Street. ;)

Nice to see that Hammer is an All/Descendents fan. I thought most people had forgot about these two bands. I just picked up a copy of Allroy's Revenge on vinyl, and guess what: it still sounds great!--way better than the hissy-sounding cd.

I recently picked up the Descendants 'Merican EP, which I really like. Sure, it's from 2004, but I am hopelessly out of touch.

Yup--Merican is a great song. The Descendents new stuff is still strong. I think "Cool To Be You," their last full-length was from about 2004. It's a good one, too. Were you in Madison when Milo was there? My brother used to see him at the gym.
