Smilin' Norm is trumpeting the passage of the HOPE Act, which he co-sponsored. The HOPE Act would allow research to be performed using stem cells from embryos which (a) have not be created for research purposes and (b) are already "naturally dead" (text of bill). The bill enjoyed bipartisan support. The President intends to sign it.
Coleman voted against a broader bill which would have allowed research using embryos from fertility clinics provided that the embryos (a) were created for fertility purposes, (b) the embryos would be discarded, not implanted, and (c) the embryos were donated for research with consent and absent compensation (text of bill).
Researchers are concerned that the Coleman will do little to enhance research into potentially life-saving therapies.
