So here we have the WMD for which we sought, hidden in Fallujah either by foreign al-Qaeda terrorists or, more likely, remnants of the Saddam Hussein regime that knew where to get them. I'm no expert, but I think that 40 vials of this chemical could ruin the day for thousands of Iraqis, American troops, or people anywhere in the world that the terrorists could reach. This picture appears to answer George Bush's critics, and it shows that a lot more of this material is still probably floating around in Iraq. It demonstrates the critical necessity to reduce all of the "insurgent" strongholds as quickly as possible, before someone gets the chance to use it. Captain's Quarters
Last Friday I posted about the discovery of a case filled with vials labeled sarin: "In the course of locating seven weapons caches in a single block around a mosque in northeast Fallujah, an Iraqi platoon Wednesday found a suitcase full of vials labeled "Sarin," a deadly nerve agent. While further analysis determined that the find was probably part of a Soviet test kit with samples, its discovery in a room with mortar shells appeared to indicate an intent to weaponize the material." California Yankee(Quoting the Christian Science Monitor)
I'm not surprised the terrorists had a nerve agent. I'm only confounded by the fact they didn't either use the weapons against the Marines or take them with while fleeing the city. Must have been in a real rush to get out of there. Or they have more stashed away somewhere. Conservative Eyes.
The story was also picked up at The Command Post and Instapundit. The Freepers were immediately convinced:Sarin has not been found in Fallujah.(NPR audio).
To their credit, most of these sites posted updates as the story was debunked. Updates to blogs are a tricky thing, however. After a few hours, most of these stories disappear from the front page of the blog, never to be seen again. A better practice would be to post the update as new entry with the same prominence. Thousands of our friends on the right probably still believe that sarin was found in Fallujah this week. This is one reason why the PIPA study found so many people on the right were so mistaken about the invasion of Iraq. I don't know how to cure this ailment, but I know this: facts are stubborn things. All the more so when a phony fact starts bouncing around the right wing echo chamber.
