Remember what you're fighting for:

David Cross deems the South a region dominated by an ignorance more pure than anywhere else in the nation. Is he right? Seems to be:

Some Miss. Libraries Ban Jon Stewart Book

Library officials in two southern Mississippi counties have banned Jon Stewart's best-selling "America (The Book)" over the satirical textbook's nude depictions of the nine U.S. Supreme Court justices.

"I've been a librarian for 40 years and this is the only book I've objected to so strongly that I wouldn't allow it to circulate," said Robert Willits, director of the Jackson-George Regional Library System of eight libraries in Jackson and George counties.

"We're not an adult bookstore. Our entire collection is open to the entire public," Willits said. "If they had published the book without that one picture, that one page, we'd have the book."

Wal-Mart has declined to stock the book because of the page, which features the faces of the nine Supreme Court justices superimposed over naked bodies. The facing page has cutouts of the justices' robes, complete with a caption asking readers to "restore their dignity by matching each justice with his or her respective robe."

Yet these are, apparently, the important voters:

DNC Chairman Candidates Focus on South

Seven candidates for chairman of the Democratic National Committee promised Saturday to address the concerns of Southern voters, saying they had learned the lessons of the past two elections.

"You want to know my Southern strategy, show up," said Howard Dean, the former Vermont governor who dropped out of the presidential race during last year's Democratic primaries.

Dean and the other candidates seeking to replace Terry McAuliffe as the face of the Democratic Party spoke before a Southern audience at the first of several regional caucuses to give Democratic Party officials a chance to hear from them.

"You can't compete in just 19 or 20 states," said former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb, another candidate for national party chairman. "You get better odds in Las Vegas than with that program."

Did Kerry compete? I dunno. When the President calls you a liar in front of millions of people for quoting him accurately, I think you make an issue out of it. I think if you want to compete, you put together an ad with three quotes:

Bush: "I truly am not that concerned about him."

Kerry: "He said, 'I don't know. I don't really think about him very much. I'm not that concerned.'"

Bush: "I don't think I ever said I'm not worried about Osama bin Laden. That's kind of one of those exaggerations."

That's how you compete.

UPDATE

The Jackson-George Regional Library system won't carry Jon Stewart's book, but they will help you learn to preserve your virginity (And they'll keep trying to help: here, here, and here. Looking for information on STDs? Sorry, can't help you there. My search for "stds" and "sexually transmitted diseases" as a subject returned 0 hits.) You can also listen to a thrilling tale on incest.
