Easter: Tales From the Crypt

Posted by: Hammer / 11:34 AM

Easter Sunday's church service ended oddly. The recessional was Bach's Toccata and Fugue (sound file). I'm not a classical music buff, but it seemed to me that I recognized the song from the television series Tales From the Crypt. I can't find proof of that, but the NY Times says the music was used in a 1972 British movie of the same name and theme.

I don't know what to think of the choice of music. Was it a brave, informed choice to take a piece of music back from horror movies? Was it an uninformed choice, not knowing that the piece is associated with blood-curdling terror? Or -- and most unlikely -- was it a wholly informed, ironic choice. After all, Easter itself is the celebration of the original Tale from the Crypt.

I'll add a squeamishly bad pun as soon as I think of one.
