Right track/wrong track

1. On the standard right direction/wrong track question, the poll finds only 34 percent saying right direction and 51 percent saying wrong track. Thats the worst reading in this poll for Bushs entire administration, with the lone exception of last May.
I don't think it's that simple. There are millions of Americans who voted for Bush because they think America is on the wrong track -- headed toward a secularism and rationality which they view as an amoral abyss and which I would welcome as a second enlightenment. (Maybe the first on these shores).
Otherwise, the polls are full of bad news for Americans. Not for Bush, who doesn't face re-election and not necessarily for Republican office holders. 2004 proved the importance of the single issue voter. Millions of Americans will take a lousy environment, weakened worker protections, reduced global standing, and trillions of borrowing so the superwealthy don't have to pay their fair share of taxes so long as gay couple can't marry, women can't have abortions, and the promise to bomb the brown-skinned is solemnly kept.
