DSM FOIA

Does Britain have a Freedom of Information Act equivalent? If not, get one. Once you do, let's have all the enterprising right wing bloggers in England pepper the government with FOIA requests. You don't need much. Just ask Jack Straw's office for any memoranda relating to a Prime Minister's meeting on July 23, 2002.
You ought to get one of three responses:
- No such memos exist
- The memos exist, but are classified
- Copies of the memos
If Straw's office claims the memos don't exist, we can all have great fun proving either the
Downing Street Memo is a forgery or unraveling the cover-up.
If Straw's office claims the memos exist, but are classified, you'll have to sue. Surely the parts of the memos that have been printed worldwide no longer merit protection. We'll take what we can get and compare.
If Straw's office produces the memos, we can have a good laugh while Captain's Quarters explains to us all the difference between fakes and frauds.
I think the answer is that the DSM is exactly as fake and fraudulent as the Schiavo memo. Cleversponge has a timeline of the Schiavo memo, plus this link to the Media Matters debunking.
Epilogue
Here's my favorite hypocrisy on the DSM. In March, CQ criticized Howard Kurtz for not properly faulting reporters for their coverage of the Schiavo memo: "[N]or does he mention any steps either organization have taken to correct the impression their articles have obviously left with fellow journalists in the Exempt Media."
As of right now, Captain Ed's little DSM myth has 55 trackbacks, mostly along these lines:
- May be a fraud, of course. (link)
- Looks like the CBS standard applies to the Downing Street Memos. (link)
- Uh-oh. The Downing Street Memos...which neither quote anyone named Bush or Blair...seem to be big fat fakes, after all. (link)
- Fake but accurate? The left tries a forgery again and it blows up in their faces. (link)
I'm sure that Captain Ed is doing all he can to clear up any confusion he's created by drawing an arbitrary distinction between "fake" and "fraud". Here's a clue: when Captain Ed says "fake" he means "reproduction". Gee, I wonder why he chose such a confusing term...
