Child sex instruction

Posted by: Hammer / 12:54 PM

Maybe I'm dumb, but when I read "child sex instruction" as a subject in a school library, I assume it's a book about instructing children about human sexuality. Arkansas's one-woman sex cop sees it differently:

An Arkansas mother who succeeded in getting three sexually explicit books removed from Fayetteville school libraries says she has found there are more than a hundred books of that nature in the school district. Now a mental health counselor is recommending a parental audit of all the books in the city's school libraries.

According to a search conducted by Fayetteville mom Laurie Taylor, out of 502 books listed under "sex" in the city's middle, junior high, and high school libraries, there are 66 books on sex instruction, and 32 of those are on child sex instruction. Another 75 of the books deal with homosexuality, 23 fall under the category of lesbian fiction, 16 are on rape, 9 on incest, and there are even some books on bestiality.

The article goes on to quote Dr. Warren Throckmorton, noted literary critic:

Dr. Throckmorton says it is important to remember, researchers warn that kids who are exposed to sexually explicit material -- whether it be in books or on television -- are more inclined to engage in sexual activity. He feels an audit should be made of the books currently included in the Fayetteville School Libraries, to be conducted by a broad committee of parents in the school system.

Yep, if we can just eliminate sex from books, movies, and television, kids will stop having sex forever.

I wish people would investigate what they are talking about before they make bad assumptions. The books that are being talked about have nothing to do with "sex ed" they are fiction novels for the most part that use extreme vulgarity, and gratuituous sexual depictions. Go to www.wpaag.org and see the content of these books. If you still think that children should be able to access this material without the consent or even knowledge of thier parents then i would say you don't have children.

Here's the thing -- I have looked at these and many other crazy lists. Here's the list of 20 objectionable books. One of the books is "Gays/justice: a study of ethics, society, and law". The problem with that book? It's about homosexuality. "Coming Out in College"? Same problem.

Then you find books like Judy Blume's "Forever" on the list. It's apparent that any book with any sexual content is objectionable to some people. I entirely disagree with that.

you can disagree all you want! just don't let my children have access to these books, if you don't care that your child gets to them then sign the form and they have access...how hard is this? Just parent your kid and let me parent mine...without the sex stuff!

Yes, you should parent your child. Watch what he reads; talk to him about it. The problem is that you are trying to make certain books unavailable to all children. That's not parenting, that's censorship.

Here's the difference: if you make a decision for your child, it's parenting. if you make a decision for all children, it's censorship.
