Someone woke the President

Posted by: Hammer / 11:31 AM

CNN transcript of Bush's remarks this morning:

There's an issue right now at the convention center of New Orleans that General Honore briefed us on, trying to get food and medicine to the convention center.

I'm sick and fucking tired of knowing things before the president of the United States does. Or is he lying? Bush talked to Ray Nagin, mayor of New Orleans. On Thursday night, Nagin was very upset about the refuges at the convention center:

I've got 15,000 to 20,000 people over at the convention center. It's bursting at the seams. The poor people in Plaquemines Parish. ... We don't have anything, and we're sharing with our brothers in Plaquemines Parish.

It's awful down here, man.

Nagin did praise Gen. Honore:

Now, I will tell you this -- and I give the president some credit on this -- he sent one John Wayne dude down here that can get some stuff done, and his name is [Lt.] Gen. [Russel] Honore.

I assume that Gen. Honore did not fly back to D.C. to brief Bush, but so much of this mess defies logic.

Bush says he was briefed on the convention center this morning. But AP (and everyone else) was reporting this yesterday: "The New Orleans police chief says 15,000 people are trapped in the city’s convention center. And he says some are being raped and beaten."

.

They've been moving people to the convention center since August 31, according to this widely published AP story. These people were supposed to be evacuated from the convention center:

After several hours, a small fleet of rented moving trucks showed up to take the people to the downtown convention center so they could be taken out of the city. Police herded people up metal ramps like cattle into the unrefrigerated boxes.

But, no, Mr. President, we do not need to get food and water to the convention center. We need to get those desperate people out of the city and to a safe, dry place where they will have food, water, and medical care.

Well, it is true that we need to get them out, but we also need (and have so needed now for 5 f'ing days) to get them food and water.
These are poor and black people, and they are the marginalized and neglected, and the ones that the protofascists and neocons and "nice" people like to forget. This treatment from a bunch of idiots who run around quoting chapter and verse from the Bible, telling everyone what great Christians they are.
It is CRIMINAL that the government at all levels hasn't done a better job.
But heck, after the way they fucked up Iraq, what did anyone exptect from the bozo idiots running things?

If we can't get the people away from the convention center to temporary shelter, then we must bring supplies to them there. I just can't believe that we can't move 15,000 people in a day.
