The President’s decision to nominate a woman to the court is praiseworthy and sends a very important message to all of America.
Your tool and mine: Sen. Smilin' Norm Coleman (R-MN).
It is 2005, right? I know there's political pressure on Bush to nominate a woman to fill O'Connor's spot, but the simple act of considering and nominating a woman for what Coleman apparently believes is a "man's job" is not praiseworthy. It's the standard to which all people of good conscience should be held.
So, he nominated a chick. Cool by Smilin' Norm, right? Turns out, not so much:
It is my intention to withhold judgment on this nominee as we continue to get a better sense of her qualifications as the confirmation process moves forward.
In other words, Smilin' Norm doesn't know if she's qualified or not, but the nomination is still praiseworthy. 'Cause she's a chick. And he's totally cool with that. As long she's not, you know, planning on starting a family and doesn't mind making less than the other justices.
