The latest movie poll, finally

I've been sitting on this way too long and figured it would be a good post just before the extended holiday weekend. And setting up the poll will give Hammer an excuse to get out of doing the dishes after the Hammer family feast tomorrow.

Some of you may recall that 3WN had the start of another movie poll several months ago when I asked people to make their nominations for the best ever movie scenes. We had a good response (Movie and sports posts always generate a lot more comments than our political posts. Wonder what we should think about that?) I had to leave out many good ones to get the list to a manageable size so check out the link above to see what other people suggested. Here are the 15 that I think should make the final cut:

Psycho shower scene - this is the one scene on the list that everyone knows even if they have never seen the movie

Saving Private Ryan - D-Day

The Graduate - Mrs. Robinson, you're trying to seduce me

Bonnie and Clyde - death scene

Opening scene over the planet in Star Wars - seeing this at age 12 was just about the most transcendental moment I have ever had in a theater

Splashing in Tivoli fountain in La Dolce Vita - Sofia Coppola has Bill Murray and Scarlott Johansson watching this scene in Lost in Translation

The ape throwing the bone in 2001

Taxi Driver - You talkin' to me?

Slim Pickens rides the bomb in Dr Strangelove

Hard Day's Night - "Can't Buy Me Love" - There is no more joyful 3 minutes in film history

Network - "I'm mad as hell"

The Godfather- the baptism scene - I'm less of a Godfather fan than many people but this scene was mentioned by more people than just about any other on the list

King Kong- Kong standing on top of the Empire State building

USS Indianapolis scene from Jaws

Casablanca - Victor Lazlo gets the band to play La Marseillaise to drown out the Germans singing.

No LOTR, no Almost Famous, nothing from Alien. Jambo, you disappoint me so fiercely.

Well, the death of Boromir and "Tiny Dancer" both made my initial list but it's pretty tough competition. As for Alien, I know we both agree it is the best of the series, but I think the movie is impressive for its overall tone more than any one scene. A case might be made for the baby alien thru the chest scene but I don't know that it is really in the same league with the 15 that I went with.
