Some say politics is the art of the possible. Sen. Smilin' Norm Coleman (R-MN) takes that adage in a new direction, according to the Daily News Record:
It was interesting to learn from the televised hearings that Norm Coleman, the freshman Republican senator from Minnesota, has a bizarre proposal to clean up what many regard as the mess in Washington. He would have Congress establish a committee of private citizens to examine the lobbying issues and make recommendations. Is it possible to propose anything more foolish?
A citizen's committee on ethics is a really bad idea. Not because a group of citizens couldn't write some really good ethical guidelines, but because the self-selecting pool of citizens who would volunteer for such a board would have little interest in actual reform.
