Sorry, more sports

Posted by: Hammer / 9:16 AM

Two bad items out of the Milwaukee sports pages today.

It appears Oklahoma State coach Eddie Sutton, cited for driving under the influence after an accident last week, has coached his last college game.

Sutton acknowledged Wednesday that he was not fit to drive when he got behind the wheel of his SUV recently and is again struggling with a drinking problem. Yet as a coach we'll remember Sutton for one touching moment, not the 794 games he won over 35 years.

Know what I'll already remember about Sutton? He cheated. From CBS:

As far as legacies and reputations go, Sutton had managed to overcome that bit of baggage, as well as the NCAA investigation into his Kentucky program -- including the infamous Emery envelope containing $1,000 for recruit Chris Mills -- while in Stillwater.

There should be a lifetime ban for coaches who send kids money to play for their schools. And a double lifetime ban for coaches dumb enough to get caught.

A second item from the article:

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski years ago insinuated then-North Carolina coach Dean Smith and his players received preferential treatment from game officials accorded few, if any, other coaches and teams.

Duke now receives such treatment and Krzyzewski doesn't seem to mind because the Blue Devils entered the week with more made free throws (464) than free throws attempted by their opponents (390). And this happens away from Cameron Indoor Stadium, too.

Yet too often after a Duke player is called for a foul we are treated to the sight of Krzyzewski wearing a condescending smirk and shaking his head gently from side to side. His message: I can't believe you called that foul on us. Enough already.

Duke has made more free throws than their opponents have attempted. Wow. You know what? Bo Ryan's Wisconsin teams have accomplished the same feat.

Does Duke get the benefit of the doubt from officials? Of course they do. Duke has stars and a national reputation. Stars get calls in all sports all the time. But the stat used as proof doesn't prove anything -- other than that someone in Milwaukee isn't paying attention to Wisconsin basketball.
