I learned three things today. One, a curfew can start just about any time of day or night:
The Iraqi government has called an emergency curfew on the streets of Baghdad after gunmen opened fire on a joint US-Iraqi patrol in the city. The curfew is to start at 2pm ...
Two, that Baghdad doesn't allow traffic during the day.
Three, today was a bad day to drive to work in Baghdad:
The curfew is to start at 2pm (11am BST) and last until 6am tomorrow, leaving locals struggling to get home on a busy Friday already hit by an 11am-3pm traffic ban.
Oh, and while Republicans in the U.S. have been opposing timetables for the withdrawal of U.S. troops, U.S. officials in Iraq have been proposing timetables for the withdrawal of U.S. troops:
The peace plan, which could be announced as early as Sunday, follows months of negotiations between Iraqi president Jalal Talabani, US ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad and seven Sunni insurgent groups, the Times reported.
The 28-point plan will set dates for the withdrawal of coalition forces and prevent the US from conducting operations against insurgent-controlled areas.
I assume Bush, Frist, Coleman and Kline oppose the peace deal. Wouldn't it be funny, though, if Republicans supported a plan to set dates for the withdrawal of U.S. forces just a week after saying any such plan was equivalent to surrender?
