Cool and clever DVD bonus feature

Posted by: Jambo / 6:23 PM

Jerjo just sent me a link to one of my favorite DVD bonus features, found originally on the director's cut of Almost Famous. The clip itself is cool but the story behind it is what really makes it for me. When Cameron Crowe made Almost Famous Led Zeppelin had never before let one of their songs be used in a film but since Crowe was an old friend of theirs, and the movie was in part inspired by his time on the road with them when he covered the band for Rolling Stone, they consented to the use of Tangerine and That's the Way. But Crowe had also wanted to use Stairway to Heaven and had even filmed an entire scene around the song. The band held firm and the scene, even tho filmed, had to be dropped. When it came time to release an extended version of the movie on DVD the band still would not relent so Crowe came up with a clever way to let people see the scene as he originally intended. He puts the deleted scene on the DVD without the song, but figuring just about everyone has Stairway to Heaven someplace in their music collection he instructs viewers to cue up the song and provides a countdown in the scene as to when to hit play to get the full effect. I tried it myself a couple years ago when I first got the DVD but was a fraction of a second off hitting play and didn't quite get the song to match the action on screen. Someone with a better sense of timing has put it all on Youtube for us:

I guess the dam has broken. The Immigrant Song appears in Jack Black's School of Rock.

That's some ugly spam. You guys know you're making it big as bloggers when you start getting the spammers attention.

In the bonus material for School of Rock, Jack Black shows what he did to get The Immigrant Song. When they shot the concert scene at the end of the movie, they filmed Jack beseeching Zeppelin on stage with the entire crowd chanting "Zeppelin" as he pleaded. Then they sent the video to Page, Plant and Jones. Apparently they were amused by the whole thing and agreed to let them use Immigrant Song for the van scene.

There are some of the old British acts that still have so much money they can turn down almost anything. the remaining members of Led Zeppelin (the $$ from the Cadillac commercial was sent to charitites), Pink Floyd, Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, and Jambo fave Paul McCartney.
