But is it art?

Posted by: Hammer / 8:58 AM

Spammers have taken to filling their emails with aphorisms strung together like Jack Kerouac on nothing more than a cup of weak coffee. To wit:
Here is the answer which I will give to President Roosevelt. Give us the tools, and we will finish the job. No city should be too large for a man to walk out of in a morning.

Today it is not the classroom nor the classics which are the repositories of models of eloquence, but the ad agencies. The art of creation is older than the art of killing.

Gratitude is a twofold love -- love coming to visit us, and love running out to greet a welcome guest. The cross of the Legion of Honor has been conferred on me. However, few escape that distinction.

Try to be the best of what you are, even if what you are is no good. If you were graduated yesterday, and have learned nothing today, you will be uneducated tomorrow. Increased means and increased leisure are the two civilizers of man.

Seek peace, and pursue it. [Proverbs 34:14]

All you need to be a fisherman is patience and a worm.''I can forgive, but I cannot forget,'' is only another way of saying, ''I cannot forgive.'' It is well-known what a middleman is: he is a man who bamboozles one party and plunders the other. Make the best use of what is in your power, and take the rest as it happens. I'd rather give my life than be afraid to give it. Faithfulness and sincerity are the highest things. A line will take us hours maybe Yet if it does not seem a moment's thought, our stitching and unstinting has been naught. Knowledge is the treasure, but judgment is the treasurer of the one who is wise.

If the Art Institute of Chicago can deem a string of white lights strewn upon the floor by facilities personnel to be "art", then I submit there is something artful about these aphorisms strung together and strewn across an email by someone who wants to sell me the secrets to Red Hot Persuasion Techniques.
