After my lousy experience with Best Buy Customer Service, I'm happy to report that Netflix actually reads emails before they answer them:
As for the delay in shipping, we try to ship you DVDs from the distribution center closest to you so that you get movies quickly. In certain instances, your top choice may not available to you from your closest distribution center. When this happens, your DVD will ship on the next business day and may come from an alternate distribution center. Thank you for using Netflix!
Oh, I see. Most DVDs reach me very quickly because they are shipped from Minneapolis. The last DVD took a little extra time because it was shipped from a different location. Not only does that make sense, it actually answers my question.
