Hypocrisy: Filibuster Style

Posted by: Hammer / 3:31 PM

Remember this from yesterday?
Frist Just Wants Senators to Vote Never in 214 years had a judicial nominee with majority support been denied a straight up-or-down vote before the full Senate, until two years ago when Democrats began filibustering the president's nominees.

In a videotaped statement to the rally, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said he wants to call for a vote to stop Senate filibusters on the nominees -- and that in doing so, he is just asking senators to do their job and vote. The senator rejects charges that ending Senate judicial filibusters is radical. "I don't think it's radical to ask senators to vote," he said. "I don't think it's radical to expect senator to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities."

Got that? Filibuster: bad. Filibuster: undemocratic.

Put that in the part of your brain that loves Jesus. File this in the part of your brain that loves the death penalty for mentally retarded kids:

Alabama Gambling Interests Accused of Trying to Stifle Free Speech

Christian Leader Claims HB 75 Will Leave Pro-Family Supporters Vulnerable to Intimidation

For the last four weeks, a group of 10 state senators in Alabama has been filibustering a bill that the lawmakers believe is backed by the gambling lobby, and the head of the state Christian Coalition believes the legislation is designed to hurt the political efforts of groups like his that are working against that lobby.

John Giles is president of the Christian Coalition of Alabama. He says the bill known as HB 75, which was approved in the State House last year, would require the donor list of his and other issue advocacy nonprofit groups be disclosed -- a requirement which he believes would open those on the list up to attack.

At the end of the article, Giles "urges all Alabama citizens to call their state senators' offices and demand a no vote on the legislation." It's hard to imagine, though, that the filibustering 10 don't have the support of the CCA.
