Doomed to repeat it

Posted by: Hammer / 7:50 AM

From Liddell Hart's History of the Second World War:
There were clear signs that the Soviet authorities had been misled by their sources of information about the situation in Finland, and that, instead of reckoning on serious resistance, they imagined that they might have to do no more than back up a rising of the Finnish people against an unpopular government. ... While authoritarian regimes are particularly susceptible to the kind of reports on the situation which accord with their wishes, no type of government is immune from such risks.
Pages 45 and 48 of the paperback edition, discussing the Russian invasion of Finland.

Seems like someone at the DoD should've reread their Liddell Hart (one of the foremost military historians) before selling the nation on the cakewalk into Baghdad.
