Status quo 5, compromise 3

Posted by: Hammer / 3:00 PM

Minnesota Politics provided a link to the video from Sviggum's remarks on the floor Monday. Here's my quick, rough, and dirty transcription of Sviggum's statement:
With some mixed emotion, I stand here today, representative Rukavina to oppose the Jaros motion. I did have some hestitation to the governor calling us back into special session when he did. But we are here now, we are going to do the work for the citizens of the state of Minnesota, we're going to finish the job as a body. All 134 of us, all 201 with the Senate. It's our job. It's our responsibility to do it.

And we just don't fold up our tent and go home when things aren't going right. We stay here and finish the job. We get the job done. As Republicans, we will be here to do the people's business. If you and representative Jaros and other Democrats decide to fold up the tent and go home, that will be your decision. But Republicans will stay here, we'll finish the job, and do the work of the citizens of the state of Minnesota.

And I think that's what we're elected to do. It's not easy, we certainly aren't getting, Representative Rukavina, we're not getting the proper respect from the Senate, from your colleagues in the Senate that we ought to get. Their reaction to our proposal last week was very, very disappointing.

The Senate DFL and to some degree the House DFL with representative Entenza being part of it, is willing to shut down state government just because they want to raise taxes. Because they want to raise the tax burden so bad, it doesn't make any difference if it's gas, if it's income, if it's property tax, if it's statewide property tax, if it's FOC [foreign operating corporations], Democrats want to raise taxes so bad they'll shut down state government. Well, Republicans are going to stay here, we're going to do the people's business, we're going to do the work, and we're not going to increase tax burdens on the citizens of the state.

In today's Strib, Sviggum mentions "compromise" 3 times (he mentions "status quo" 5 times -- something tells me that phrase has been Luntzed), but is there a single note of compromise in what Sviggum said on the floor?
