The buck doesn't even slow down here

From the Washington Post:

White House Shifts Blame

Bush, who has been criticized, even by supporters, for the delayed response to the disaster, used his weekly radio address to put responsibility for the failure on lower levels of government.

Well of course he did. This was a man when asked to comment on any mistakes he had made in his first term was unable to think of any. What an asshole. This is the Bush administration, hell the Bush life, in a nutshell--a complete inability to take responsibility for anything. They ignore clear warnings, choose to reward political cronies rather than deal with problems, screw up when circumstances finally force them to deal with an issue, and then claim it is all someone else's fault. Why this man doesn't have approval ratings in the low 20s I'll never understand.

In the meantime LA Gov. Blanco has hired James Lee Witt, Bill Clinton's FEMA director, to advise her on the relief effort. Good move since the political hack W replaced him with had zero qualifications for the job and has been a disgrace. Ironically Bush publicly praised Witt in a 2000 debate with Al Gore.

You know, as governor, one of the things you have to deal with is catastrophe. I can remember the fires that swept Parker County, Texas. I remember the floods that swept our state. I remember going down to Del Rio, Texas. I have to pay the administration a compliment. James Lee Witt of FEMA has done a really good job of working with governors during times of crisis.

Read this Slate article about how Witt revitalized FEMA during the Clinton years and how, like so many other Clinton accomplishments, (peace, prosperity, that sort of thing) W has managed in 4 years to completely reverse it.

Update: An hour later and the Post has changed the headline to the much less powerful "Thousands Await Help, While Feds Shift Blame." Interesting. Here's a partial screen capture of the original: I wonder what the print edition ended up with? Our traffic reports show we have a number of readers in the DC area, if any of you happen to see it I'd love to know which it was.
