John Kline told MPR:
"I think there's some areas that warrant close consideration. What are we spending on NASA, for example? What about manned space flight? Is that something that should be pushed back and perhaps save some money there?" Kline asked. "How much are we spending on aid packages overseas?"
Kline said Congress should examine all federal spending -- except defense spending. Kline, who is a retired Marine, said with U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, now is not the time to cut military funding. Unlike some other Republicans, Kline also doesn't want to delay a Medicare prescription drug benefit scheduled to begin in January.
Gee, I wonder where he came up with that? Oh, CATO said so:
There's no problem with Kline towing the CATO party line. I'm a bit bothered that Kline wants to cut foreign aid without knowing how little it costs. If Kline really wants to be a CATO hero, though, he should be loud & proud about it. John Kline should call for the repeal of farm subsidies, which cost over $20 billion a year.
NASA is obsolete with the arrival of private manned space flight
Really? Other than parking the occasional communications satalite in orbit what has private space flight done? I'm was as excited as the next guy about SpaceShipOne but poking your nose up above 62 miles and then falling back isn't exactally a trip to the moon. Sure, the day will come but not any time soon.
That really struck me, too. Do we want to subcontract out defense satellites? CATO only wants to cut the NASA budget by 50%. I guess that means they do some good.
