Whose side is the Pope on?

Posted by: Jambo / 2:35 PM

Well, we certainly know whose side he ISN'T on. I'm sure most 3WN readers have seen this story already:

Homosexuals, even those who are celibate, will be barred from becoming Roman Catholic priests, a church official said Wednesday, under stricter rules soon to be released on one of the most sensitive issues facing the church.
But I'm kind of interested in what the real right wingers think about this. Not interested enough to subject myself to one of their blogs, mind you, but interested all the same. The fundies all claim that homosexuality is a "lifestyle choice" that is an abomination against god whereas most of us rational folks see it as an immutable inborn characteristic. After all, I don't know anyone who ever chose to be straight so it seems equally likely that no one ever chooses to be gay either. But isn't the Catholic Church here coming down on the side of immutable characteristic? Because if one is celibate they are by definition not making the supposed lifestyle choice to be gay, right? The church is saying gay is gay and whether one engages in any sexual activity or not there is something about homosexuality that is independent of behavior. So what do the fundies have to say about it? If gays are simply "the way god made 'em" then there is no reason for the right's discrimination/vilification other than blind bigotry and prejudice. And no real Christian could ever support that, could they?
