More than meets the eye

Posted by: Hammer / 1:27 PM

Unless there's more to this story, and there probably is, I can finally agree with the Alliance Defense Fund: a 5th grader should be free to read pretty much whatever he wants at recess:

Luke Whitson and his parents have filed a motion for preliminary injunction against Knox County School officials, who allegedly threatened to punish the boy for reading his Bible during recess at Karns Elementary School. The district claims the Bible reading jeopardizes student safety and that, because recess is not "free time," they can prohibit Bible reading during that time.

According to the complaint, some parents complained to the principal about the Bible reading at recess. That makes me suspect there's more to this than quiet, reflective study. In the public square -- and the schoolyard is more or less public -- you should expect to be exposed to ideas and opinions contrary to your own. If an atheist/Jewish/Catholic/Buddhist/Flying spaghetti monster parent is afraid that an 11 year old pentecostal is going to de-program their child, I gotta say tough. Teach your kids to think for themselves and stand up for what they believe and they'll be a lot happier in the long run then if you cram dogma down their throats like the last cardboard box into the recycling bin after an Ikea spree.
