Sorry, folks, another football note as the season draws near. Read this about the Packers:
Whitticker, a seventh-round draft choice, gave up some of his time to veteran Grey Ruegamer during the last week of camp, but he has been the No. 1 candidate at right guard since the first exhibition game. He will be the first rookie offensive lineman to start a game for the Packers since Ken Ruettgers in 1985 and the first to win the opening-day job based on performance since Mark Koncar in 1976.
That's pretty amazing, eh? The first rookie offensive lineman to start a game in 20 years. The first to start on opening day in almost 30 years. Except it's not true.
Both Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher started the majority of the season in their rookie years (2000). Before them, Ross Verba (1997) and John Michels (1996) had starts in their rookie years.
