The latest from HKK, MWW. Yawn.

Posted by: Jambo / 3:26 PM

I have not had much to say lately about Minnesota's Worst Writerâ„¢. This is only partly due to the fact that I tend to read the Strib at lunch and have enough trouble keeping down the lousy food out here in the suburbs without further Kersten induced stomach churning. It is also partly due to the recent series of vacuous and repetitive stories she has run. Yes KK, we get it. Church-goers and soldiers, good. Journalistic standards, bad. Today's gruel (meaning the column, not lunch) is no different but I wasn't all that hungry and figured I could give it a shot. Nothing unusual in a piece about dozens of young men that will under no circumstances consider sleeping with Katherine, but these guys have the additional disincentive of wanting to become priests. These guys, according to KK, have disavowed not simply the 1960s, but the 70s and 80s as well. I guess I should add that to her M.O. 1950s, good. Any period in KKs living memory, bad. About the only thing worth noting was this:

You'd think the recent bad press about clergy sexual abuse would have slowed the stream of potential priests to a trickle. But SJV... has an entering class of 49 -- the largest in 20 years. In fact, SJV has more college seminarians than any other Catholic seminary in the country. Young men flock here from 24 Catholic dioceses, from Alaska to Kentucky.
They're drawing people from across 2/3 of the country and the class is only 49? That just doesn't sound like a major growth industry to me. Of course there are a dozen issues of political and social importance that could have been lead into from this story, but all KK can come up with is that the boys at SJV sure are great cheerleaders. I ask it almost every time, but is this woman really worth a single column inch in a major daily newspaper?

Tired of duplicating Hammer's posts, Jambo decides to dupe his own.

Oh. I know. But damn it, the woman just isn't giving me anything to work with!

Or was your comment not about content but rather the fact that the post ittself for a while was showing up twice? The Blogger site seems to have been having some trouble today.

I think she's ignoring the national statistics of men entering the priesthood. But leave it to KK to ignore statistics. But all I have heard from Catholic friends is that there is an acute shortage of priests and lately the church has been bringing them in from South America and Africa.

This hits the nail on the head. This is why we don't have the stomach to write about her anymore. We are quite thankful that Spotty has picked up the slack.

Yes, she is ignoring national statistics. She is also ignoring the fact that the main areas of Catholic growth are in areas where liberation theology is popular.

Of course, lt is often referred to as "Catholic socialism". We're pretty sure KK is all about that. Of course, before he was Pope Benedict, Ratzinger used his position to crack down on what he believed to be the Marxist tendencies of lt adherents.

As a Catholic who likes to think he pays attention, KK's columns are especially mind boggling because she glosses over some really real problems in the church by providing cute local examples. This is a lot like her coverage of Iraq; ignore the big picture but talk about big rigs with flags and quote 1 LTC who just got back.

Pathetic.

Is liberation theology still much of a movement? I had assumed that it wasn't but would be glad to hear otherwise.
