Now the 4th quarter has been a problem for the Redskins all season (except for their final minute come from behind victory over the hated Cowboys) so this isn't over by any means. But I'm still excited about this race, both because it is a potential Democratic pick-up in the south and because it features two former Redskin stars. OK, Charles Taylor is not really Hall of Fame receiver Charlie Taylor. Oh, and Shuler was not really a star in his three years in Washington. But still, picking up a house seat in North Carolina would be cool.As the political climate has turned sour for Republicans, Rep. Charles Taylor (R-N.C.) finds himself trailing his Democratic challenger by tens of thousands of dollars, dogged by ethics charges and running in an increasingly Democratic district.
Former NFL quarterback Heath Shuler (D) is challenging Taylor, in the 11st District, in rural, western North Carolina.
At the end of the third quarter, Shuler had $248,957 in the bank while Taylor had just $19,369, according to Federal Election Commission reports.
And giving up while you were still ahead is the only reason Becker and I have not given you any crap about football in the last two months.

, atThat was exactly my plan. There were fans of half a dozen teams just waiting to do the same so I figured I'd git while the gittin' was good. My one solace is that I don't have to hear anything from Hammer, either.
