Smilin' Norm is on record opposing deep cuts in Medicaid spending. He's one of a group of 7 senators who will now decide the fate of Medicaid. Will Smilin' Norm stand up for what he believed in a short time ago? Or will he buckle under pressure from the extreme right wing of his party and make a show of balancing the budget on the backs of the poor?
From Common Dreams/Families USA:
The Conference Committee agreement on the budget reconciliation bill that the House adopted and the Senate will consider includes approximately $23 billion in 10-year Medicaid cuts that will directly harm low-income program beneficiaries....
"The fate of these Medicaid cuts is now largely in the hands of seven Republican and two Democratic Senators - Senators Lincoln Chafee (R-RI), Norm Coleman (R-MN), Susan Collins (R-ME), Mike DeWine (R-OH), Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Ben Nelson (D-NE), Gordon Smith (R-OR), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), and Arlen Specter (PA). The seven Republican Senators last week sent a letter to the Senate leadership rejecting the House Medicaid cuts, and the two Democrats were the only members of their party who earlier voted for the more moderate Senate budget bill.
Republicans are busy pushing another round of irresponsible tax cuts for the uber-rich while hiding behind a guise of fiscal responsibility by cutting Medicaid. Smilin' Norm should take a principled stand against these cruel cuts. He's signed a letter. He's almost there. Now, he needs to vote with the people's interests ahead of his party.
