Minnesota Republican Norm Coleman said Chertoff "failed the President" by not informing him of the doubts he had about then-Federal Emergency Management Agency head Michael Brown. The "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job" comment came a day after Chertoff says that he had begun to question Brown's ability.
Vice President accidentally shoots a man? Don't wake the president (International Herald Tribune):
The answer given was that Card had called to tell the president about the accident at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, without knowing of Cheney's involvement, and that Karl Rove, the White House deputy chief of staff, had then spoken to Armstrong. Rove, the e-mail message said, "then called the president shortly before 8 p.m. EST to update him and let him know the vice president had accidentally shot Mr. Whittington."
