Mark Chmura: very, very icky

Posted by: Hammer / 2:21 PM

Disgraced former Packer Mark Chmura is popping off about Favre's slow decision on retirement:

Former Green Bay tight end Mark Chmura is critical of Packers quarterback Brett Favre for failing to make up his mind about retirement, saying Favre is selfish and hypocritical.

Chmura also says his estranged friend did not call him once between the time Chmura was accused of sexual assault in April 2000 and his acquittal at trial 10 months later in February 2001.

"People who don't think that it's all about him are fooling themselves," said Chmura, referring to Favre not yet making known his plans to return next season or retire. "With a quote like, 'What are they going to do, cut me?' It's all about him."

Favre made his comment about getting cut last week to reporters. It sounded like a line tossed out in jest, but some observers, including Chmura, have chosen to see an example of Favre's arrogance in it.

..."Where it's hypocritical is, he's very critical of Javon Walker and he's not a team player, you know he (Walker) doesn't care about the team," Chmura said. "Well, what is he (Favre) doing now? I mean, does he think this is the best thing possible for the team? I mean, they have one quarterback on the roster who they like, who hasn't even started one NFL game. They have to know."

..."He's a selfish guy," Chmura said. "He's a very selfish guy. And what people don't know, I'm not going to say this to throw the guy under the bus, but this is a guy from my arrest to my acquittal never called me one time."

..."You know what wrecked the whole thing?" Chmura asked. "It's money. You know?"

I hope Brett Favre retires. Without him, the Packers will be awful next year. Deeply, horribly wretched. They will win about 3 games. With Favre, the Packers will be very bad next year. Very bad, indeed. They will win no more than 8 games. The cupboard is bare. The talent is depleted. For as much as I've enjoyed watching Favre play for the last 16 years, his presence next year only lengthens the Packers rebuilding process.

That said, Mark Chmura is further off base than Wesley Snipes in Major League. Favre's indecision doesn't hurt the team. The Packers have plenty of cap space, so Favre's salary is not an issue. Either the Packers like Aaron Rodgers or they don't. If they don't like Rodgers, draft someone. If they do like Rodgers, sign Joey Harrington to play for a year. How better to assure a 2 win season?

Favre has made some bad decisions in his life, most of which only he knows about. He's an alcoholic and a drug addict with a reputation for getting very drunk and wild with Chmura. At the same time Favre was cleaning up his life -- first quitting the Vicodin, a couple years later giving up booze -- his buddy Chmura is charged with sexually assaulting a 17 year old girl at a post-prom beer fest.

Chmura was acquitted of the criminal charges. Just because he's not guilty doesn't mean he didn't do anything wrong. Brett Favre and I are alike in at least 3 ways. We're terrible actors. We were born in September. We are fathers of daughters. Fathers of daughters do not want to hear that their friends are having drunken hot tub parties in their underwear with 17 year old girls.

Is Favre selfish for cutting ties with Chmura? Maybe. It was certainly wise to cut ties with a man who was continuing to booze it up while you were quitting. It was wise to cut ties with a guy who clearly contributed to your self-destructive past. Was it selfish? Sure. Sure it was selfish of Favre to put his life and his family ahead of Chmura's life.

It's not money that wrecked the friendship. It was booze and inappropriate behavior with 17 year old girls. So, Favre is selfish for cutting ties with Chmura. But it was also a good decision. Brett Favre is selfish. But Mark Chmura -- well, he's not a criminal, but he's very, very icky.

Chmura....what a bitter, bitter man. For a guy who refused to shake Pres. Clintons hand because of the Lewinsky scandal and then got caught acting inappropriatly at a prom party (?! ..loser) he sure has alot to hypocritically say about Favre. Hey Mark, if one of my husbands friends got caught being a perv toward some 17 year old...he'd drop him too! You only "changed your ways" because YOU GOT CAUGHT! You got your superbowl ring BECAUSE of Favre. If you have'nt had to pawn it for leagal fees, think of THAT the next time you look at it.
