Packer black eye

Posted by: Hammer / 8:37 AM

Turns out, Green Bay can be an unfriendly place for certain people:

FiveSix Ultra Lounge nightclub may receive a second chance to have its liquor license renewed, said Green Bay City Council member Celestine Jeffreys, but she wonders what club owner Nick Barnett, a Green Bay Packers linebacker, thinks of the city .

"I think our city will definitely recover from this," she said. "I just hope Mr. Barnett will be able to trust us again. I'm concerned about that."

...The FiveSix decision also brought up questions of racism when a Green Bay police officer issued Barnett, who is black, a written warning for jaywalking, while TV crew members who were interviewing him at the time didn't receive warnings. Also, a racial slur and swastikas were found spray-painted on the side of his club on Friday, less than a day after Mayor Jim Schmitt asked the council to revisit its 8-4 decision denying the license.

Ba Ha Ha provided some context on this. Barnett's club, which is in a residential neighborhood, has a largely African American clientele in a largely Caucasian town. Barnett was issued a liquor license after Mayor Schmitt called for the do-over.

I wonder what the vote would have been if the Packers were 12-4 last year?

I bet you a DS game that the people that put graffitti on the walls of racial slurs and stuff werent democrats.

I think there are some obvious (and shameful) historical reasons why today's Republican party gets so few black votes. But I don't think it's productive to attach political labels to the most ignorant bigots in society.

By Blogger Hammer, at 9:06 AM

why? because it is true? btw I didn't say they were republicans, I said they werent democrats. you were the one that said republicans. does that say something about that party?

you just proved my point, thanks

Whatever. I'm saying it doesn't much matter how these particular idiots vote. It's like extrapolating that all liberals want to be terrorists because of John Walker Lindh.

By Blogger Hammer, at 9:54 AM

I didnt say vote either, what you just said was that people that vote republican (aka for george w bush) are zoomtard racists

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:03 AM

you can deny it all you want, mr hammer, but the republican party is based on fear and hate.

I dont know anyone that is a republican that cares about small govt, or anything that the father of modern conservatism, barry goldwater, believed.

for you that dont know about barry goldwater, and his views, you can see them here

Funny you should mention Goldwater -- his campaign was doomed based on a campaign of fear. Specifically, that electing Barry Goldwater would lead to the nuclear vaporization of little girls (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daisy_%28television_commercial%29)

I'm not defending any political party here; I'm simply stating that we should ignore the political beliefs of ignorant bigots. If you think the GOP caters to ignorant bigots, then I think it's appropriate to highlight the evidence of that and to criticize any politicans who use fear and bigotry to further their careers. I don't think it's useful to start on the other end.

By Blogger Hammer, at 10:38 AM

goldwater's campaing was doomed by that ad, an add that you would never see from the modern day democrats, cause they play within the moral rules. the republicans do not.

like I told you before, good will never win cause good is dumb.

also, refering to the original post article. what do you think the chances that the city council of green bay is republican?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:56 AM

I think they run without party affiliation, but I'm not sure on that. You can see what they look like here:

well, they are a bit republican in Green Bay... in the 2004 election, 54% of Brown County residents voted for Bush, 44% for Kerry. But in the senate race, Brown County reelected Feingold... so who knows what the hell we're thinking here in cheddarland. Personally, I think the grafitti was just silly kid stuff. We wouldn't have real racists here.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:35 PM

nothing against you, m, but calling hate crimes silly kids stuff is part of the problem.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:53 PM

The perps probably weren't Green Party members either. But I bet they were douchebags, tho.

By Blogger Jambo, at 1:56 PM

The grafitti incident happened after the license was revoked. I think only a kid would vandalize a business that's already shut down and a real racist wouldn't resort to spray paint. Or maybe a misguided youth would spray slurs and things like that to highlight their opinion that this was a decision based on race. This doesn't seem like a hate crime.

I like Green Bay. I grew up in Green Bay. Even with all the factories and other blue collar jobs, the city is pretty moderate politically, not oppressively republican, and seems to go with the tide. I would guess Brown County was Pro Clinton, and the Gore/Bush ratio was closer than that of Bush/Kerry.

I am sure Green Bay has racists and ignoramuses just like every other town, from Minneapolis to Mobile. You can't blame the town, or try to justify the problem by saying it is because it's a republican leaning population. As said above, the people who wrote the slurs are douche bags, as were the city council members who voted against the license; unfortunately these types of douche bags are everywhere.

I tend to agree with you on that, TP, but there's a good chance that the taggers with stupid kids who acted more out of stupidity than true hatred. I'm not defending the kids, but there's a big difference between spraying offensive words on a building and a lynching.
