Well covered in previous posts, but still...

Ooo, this can't make the whiners over at Kennedy vs the Waffle Maker very happy. (The post below links to the Strib blog about this issue but the story itself ran on page one of the print edition.)

And as long as you're checking in on the appliance fighting shillers check out this blatant falsehood on their site:

That is not being against the Estate or Death Tax. She [Amy Klobuchar] feels it is OK for the federal government to seize the bulk of a dead person’s wealth.

Now of course in the line right before that they admit that Klobuchar would exempt the first $5 million of a person's estate so that any dead guy worth less than that would pay ZERO. So when they say "a dead person" they mean only a very very few dead people. And when they say "the bulk" they're just plain lying since that implies more than half and the top tax rate for estates in 2007 will be 45%. Since the machine of the moment in the Kennedy fight is now apparently a calculator we'll do the math for them:
  • Estate of $1 million: tax of zero
  • Estate of $5 million: tax of zero
  • Estate of $6 million: tax of $450,000 (for a rate of 7.5%, about what us working stiffs pay for FICA taxes every paycheck)
  • Estate of $1 bazillion: tax of .45(bazillion - $5 million) for a tax rate of a little less than 45%

So I guess the dead person who gets the bulk of his estate taxed away is, well, no one. Truth never has been much of a Republican strong suit.

Only faux republicans, not the real ones.
I wish you dems would make the distinction.

I hope you know that many of us do make the distinction. I saw an interesting post (Kevin Drum maybe) recently about generational differences in attitudes about the opposing party. It made a good point that a whole generation of voters now has no real recolection of the Republican party as it was before the days of Newt and W.
