Latest report from GU:
A US Islamic advocacy group has called for an investigation after six imams were removed from a US Airways flight and detained, due to what the group suspected was persistent "fear and prejudice" against Muslims.
The imams were among the passengers on Flight 300 from Minneapolis to Phoenix, and had been attending a conference of the North American Imams Federation. They were removed after three of them prayed before boarding the plane, a leader of the group said.
I still don't have a clear picture of what happened. If these men were praying before getting on a flight and were then kicked off the plane, it's inexcusable.
On the other hand, I've also heard that they were praying while the plane was readying for take off. That they refused to follow instructions to take their seats and put on their seat belts. That's a totally different situation -- anyone should be removed from a plane for refusing to follow standard safety instructions. (In fact, I can recall a passenger or two who should've been removed in flight for failing to follow instructions.
It's a simple question of fact. I'm concerned now that I rushed to judgment. I hope that we eventually find out what really happened here.
