What the fuck? THAT'S the lesson he got from Vietnam? I've said it before and I'll say it again, what an idiot. Tell me George, what exactly would be different in the world today if we had stayed in Vietnam? I mean other than the Khmer Rouge staying in power in Cambodia and there being a lot less room to build on the West end of the Mall in DC?President Bush said today that the American experience in Vietnam contained lessons for the war in Iraq. Chief among them, he said, was that “we’ll succeed unless we quit.”
One of the things he should have learned, in addition to the standard "popular support" and "questionable methods" tropes, is that it is a mistake to view all wars thru the prism of whatever greater conflict you are engaged in. Vietnam was not a skirmish in our larger Cold War against the Soviet Union, it was a regional war of Nationalism vs. outsiders. There was no vast Communist conspiracy at work, in fact Vietnam had long standing conflicts with Red China and more recent ones with Communist Cambodia. Is it that hard to see the parallels with Iraq and it's conflict with al Qaeda and fundamentalist Islam in general? I guess it is if you spent most of your formative years drunk and stupid.
