And frivolous things at that. I was flipping thru stations on my car radio the other day when I heard "I Need a Lover", a fairly catchy song I remember from high school. The DJ said it was by John Mellencamp which in a way is technically true. But at the time it was released he went by the name Johnny Cougar so I think that's how the DJ has to label the song. When they play "Peace Train" nobody says it's by Yusuf Islam do they? No. So Mr. DJ, "I Need a Lover" is by Johnny Cougar. Now I would not normally bother to give John Mellencamp a second thought (and I certainly wouldn't blog about him) but the very next day the man was again brought to my attention, this time by a billboard. Cities 97 has done a series of billboards over the last few years that are basically their logo along with the names of three unconnected artists they consider part of the Cities 97 sound. I don't remember the other two artists listed but in the middle it said "Mellencamp". No first name, just Mellencamp, and that is just flat out wrong. There are only a handful of artists that have earned the right to be known only by their last name and John Mellencamp is not one of them. Hendrix, Dylan, Clapton? Yes. Maybe John Lennon, and Paul McCartney, but not George Harrison, or Michael Stipe, or Tom Waits or even Michael Jackson. And certainly not John Mellencamp. And it's not a question of taste, either. I like Tom Waits and Michael Stipe way more than I like Eric Clapton, but that's just the way it is. [And no, I really didn't have anything better to write about today.]
