Still better than large parts of America

Candidate name recognition doesn't appear very important, however. For security reasons, the actual names of most candidates on the 78 party or multiparty lists have so far not been released. This odd situation, in which the candidates are not known a month before the election, attests to how dire the political and security situation in Iraq really is.
That's still better than large parts of America, where most citizens don't know anything about their government
even three years after the election.
I think the point is that the security situation is so bad in Iraq that if candidates were named, they would be targeted for assassination. The election wouldn't look so good if every ballot included dozens of recently killed candidates.
