Oy. My Badgers, my mighty, mighty Badgers.
Still. Illinois is the better team. Illinois made more than enough plays to win, no matter what. But, still, sometime around the 4:00 mark of the 2nd half, I was reminded of the Halperin memo. The ABC memo that told reporters we don't have to create the false impression of equality in the candidates honesty. So go ahead and correct John Kerry's statement that we've "spent" $200 billion in Iraq, when $200 billion has been allocated, but not all of it yet "spent", that's misleading. But don't pretend it's the same thing as Bush claiming that Kerry wants to nationalize health care, or that Bush cut taxes for 900,000 small businesses, or that capping medical malpractice would significantly reduce health care costs, or that Kerry approved of the tactics at Tora Bora as they happened, or that Bush never said he wasn't concerned about Bin Laden.
Equality is not fairness.
Just the same, the Badgers and the Illini were called for 15 fouls in last night's game. Equality. But the Badgers and the Illini play different games. The Badgers emphasize not fouling on defense -- they don't reach or grab. Illinois reaches a lot on defense and is very aggressive on the offensive boards. Fairly referred, Illinois would have whistled for more fouls than the Badgers. Fairness wasn't on display last night, equality was.
Not that it mattered. Illinois would've won. But fairness matters.
