Quote of the Week

Posted by: Hammer / 9:04 AM

From the MN GOP Newsline:
9. QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"Liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers. Conservatives saw the savagery of 9/11 and the attacks and prepared for war."

- Karl Rove, quoted by the AP, in a speech last night in New York.

I didn't know Republicans did irony, but here's item number 5 from the same list:
5. DEMOCRATS WILD RHETORIC: DICK DURBIN, HOWARD DEAN, ETC.
I think Durbin apologized, in part, because the Democratic base doesn't believe in Nazi analogies. Rove's divisive speech is glorified, in part, because the Republican base sincerely believes that all liberals are traitors.

It's stunning, really, to see the contempt that the right has for their fellow Americans. I criticize the right a lot here. I savage some of their leaders for being dishonest hypocrites. I talk about the willful ignorance that helped re-elect Bush.

Rove isn't talking about policy or leadership or ideas. He's talking about 49% of this country. And he's encouraging hate and scorn and ridicule.

We are at war in this country. In Iraq and around the world. Why is the second most powerful Republican in the country working so hard to divide the country at such a dangerous time? Why doesn't Karl Rove care more about preserving our democracy than he cares about preserving his legislative majority?

Update: I see Patrick beat me too this.

You're not the only one who questions my virility.

Karl Roves comments point out the basic difference in liberal and conservative thought on the issue of terrorism. I've posted more than a few comments about the hand wringing and self loathing liberals feel when terrorist or terrorist sympathizers are tortured. I think what Mr. Rove is pointing out is something liberals have to get in touch with if they want to regain the white house or Congress. Bush made some huge mistakes prior to this last election. Kerry should have been able to whoop his ass just based on the Iraq invasion issue alone. But I suspect the main reason Kerry didn't win is because it came down to who was going to be tough and relentless with the terrorists. Who was not going to be afraid of getting his hands dirty and cracking a few heads? Who was going to do what needed to be done while whacko anti-war liberals whined about torture and how badly we treat foreign combatants? Kerry had this coached mantra about catching and "killing" terrorists but very few people really believed that. There are a lot of areas where I agree with liberals-- Global Trade and healthcare reform to name a couple--but I don't usually vote for them because I don't trust them on taxes or national security. Liberals need to take a good look at what this constant complaining about the treatment of foreign combatants is costing them with the American people. They need to go the way of Joe Lieberman, not Dick Durbin and Teddy Kennedy. The treatment of foreign combatants is not an issue that is resonating with middle America. You may think Rove's comments are offensive, but they probably resonate with many moderates, especially the Reagan democrats. That is not a group the left should lose.
