Smilin' Norm Coleman: Eight Coats of Lacquer

Posted by: Hammer / 2:54 PM

Centrists, apparently, blog. Who knew? According to Centerfield, Sen. Smilin' Norm Coleman is a member of the Republican Main Street Partnership. Smilin' Norm a centrist? Again, who knew? Not the Eagle Forum that's for sure. Smilin' Norm voted with Schlafly's group 90% of the time in the last congress and 100% so far in this session.

According to the RMSP its members are "fiscally conservative deficit hawks". Smilin' Norm Coleman, on the other hand, has never met a tax cut or spending hike he wouldn't vote for. He's even willing to borrow trillions to fund Social Security privatization. He supports the Paris Hilton Tax cut plus $14 billion more in Medicaid funding.

The RMSP is currently focusing on stem cell research:

One of the top legislative priorities for the Republican Main Street Partnership in the 109th Congress is stem-cell research. Rep. Mike Castle, President of RMSP has introduced legislation (H.R. 810) that would expand the current federal embryonic stem-cell policy by funding research on new stem-cell lines that have been ethically derived-- from discarded embryos created through the in-vitro fertilization (IVF) process- through informed consent of the donors, and without financial inducement.

RMSP wants to work with the President to expand the policy in an ethical and moral manner that unleashes the potential of embryonic stem-cell research. We believe it can be done, and we believe it should be done for the millions of Americans suffering nationwide.

Coleman doesn't agree with the RMSP on stem cells, either:
I support a ban on all forms of embryonic cloning, and I support the president’s policy on stem cell research, which balances the moral significance of human embryos with the potential for medical advancement.
This is yet another coat of lacquer from Smilin' Norm. He's eight coats of lacquer on a rotted pine board. He joins a centrist group, but votes with the hard righties nearly 100% of the time. Plus -- PLUS -- the group he joins has a single legislative focus which Smilin' Norm has adamantly opposed.

Minnesota deserves better.

I agree. Norm's one overriding principal in life is Norm.

Norm is only concerned with his own ambition. He'll believe whatever it takes to further it.

Norm didn't used to be like this. Has anyone asked him about his no-show job when he worked for the city of New York in the 70's? or about the 'ludes?

I wouldn't care what he did 30 years ago if he was a better Senator today.
