Coleen Rowley was named one of Time magazine's people of the year for her efforts to bring attention to FBI failures prior to the September 11 attacks. She's planning to announce a run for Congress against John Kline. This, then is a pretty rotten headline:
Apple Valley resident planning run for Congress
Apple Valley resident Coleen Rowley, a former FBI agent whose criticisms of the agency's handling of counterterrorism before 9/11 led to a restructuring of the agency, announced that she plans to run for Congress.
Rowley said she will launch her campaign July 6 at a pancake breakfast at her home.
Rowley, a Democrat, said she plans to run for Minnesota's Second District in the U.S. House of Representatives, currently Republican Rep. John Kline's seat.
Kline is serving his second term, which expires in 2006.
The story itself is fine. It identifies Rowley and Kline fairly. The reporter even contacted Teresa Daly who ran for the seat in 2004. The headline, though, couldn't be much worse. INstead of "Apple Valley resident", the copy editor could've plugged in "Rowley" or "Whistleblower" or " FBI agent". There are a ton of choices, all more important than the Rowley's home city, even in a local paper.
