A couple posts down Hammer finds some decent poll numbers for W. Last week I wondered why his numbers weren't in the 20s. They're not there yet but I found a poll I like better than Hammer's:
AP/Ipsos (PDF). 9/6-8. MoE 3% (8/1-3 results)
Overall, do you approve, disapprove or have mixed feelings about the way George W. Bush is handling his job as President?
Strongly Approve 20 (23)
Somewhat Approve 11 (10)
Lean Toward Approval 8 (9)
Lean Toward Disapproval 14 (13)
Somewhat Disapprove 5 (5)
Strongly Disapprove 40 (38)
Total
Approve 39 (42)
Disapprove 59 (55)
That 20% strong favorable isn't going to change. In fact, the worse things get, I think the numbers would go up rather than down. There's at least 25% of the country who really believe in Bush. The more things go bad, the more they'll stick by their guy.
Same goes for some portion of the "strongly disapprove".
Maybe, but I don't think there are many Americans who would dislike Bush MORE if things went WELL. Unfortunately, so little has gone WELL with Bush in office that it's impossible to test the hypothesis.
CP would argue that it is absolutely necessary for that 20-25% strongly approve number to stay there until 2006. This way, the base will never give up even though the rest of the country has...well, realized what the hell is going on. If that number drops, well...the Titanic is underwater and the rats are trying to make their way to dry land. We want those greedy little suckers to go all the way down with the ship.

, atHe's a young man. There's plenty of time for him to see the light and repent his dark days.
We wish him an eternity of meaningful retrospection from his front row seat in hell. Never has 1 man done more to wound the possibility of good government and to inflate the importance of bad individuality.
