The Washington Note reports that indictments will be filed today with a press conference tomorrow. I don't have any information on the reliability of the Note.
While we're on the subject, let's remember what this is really about. The administration lied to the American public about its reasons for going to war. The administration told us that Iraq was reconstituting its nuclear weapons program and had sought uranium from Niger. The official the administration sent to Niger to investigate the claims told the truth: that he had found no evidence of any attempt to obtain uranium from Niger.
Caught in a lie, the administration attacked. The full force of the White House was brought down upon Joe Wilson. Part of the retribution included outing his wife as a covert CIA agent. This was a stupid, petty act that endangered national security.
Any charges likely to arise from this episode will be minor, with penalties disproportionate to the damage done to the nation. Most of those invovled will escape criminal sanction, but there's no shame at all in savoring what little comeuppence is actually delivered. These people betrayed a nation for narrow partisan purposes. A perjury conviction is but a downpayment on the punishment they truly deserve.
