Iraq: a slim lining of silver
Another 24 Iraqis were kidnapped yesterday. Sorry, don't know how many schools were opened. Durn librul media:
Gunmen stormed a bus station north-east of Baghdad yesterday, seizing 24 Shia Muslims after separating them from the crowd and killing most of them, authorities said. The gunmen arrived in several cars at the bus station in Muqdadiyah, 60 miles from Baghdad, at about 6am, forced the captives into four vehicles they commandeered at the scene and sped away, officials said.
Major General Ahmed al-Awad, commander of the Iraqi army's 5th division, told government television that the bodies of 20 Shias were later found. He said four people were rescued.
...Al-Awad said the attackers separated the Shias from the Sunnis, then took them to the nearby village of Ballour, an account supported by witnesses. He said nearly 400 Iraqi soldiers raided the village and rescued the four survivors. The other captives had already been moved to where the bodies were found. Al-Awad accused local police of failing to intervene.
Kidnapping, bad. Local police failing to react, also bad. But at least some portion of the Iraqi military was able to react quickly enough to save 4 lives.
