I understand the argument for winning football games at all costs. I understand that people who are really good at smashing their bodies into other people might get into a few more fights than others. I know that people who are celebrated their entire lives for being good at sports, music, or anything tend to have a me-first attitude that gets them into trouble. Character is important on a football team, but ability is more important.
For every Walter Payton, there's a Randy Moss. For every Brett Favre, who addressed his drug and alcohol addictions, there's a Koren Robinson, who hasn't.
The Packers signed Andre Rison, one of the original prima donna wide receivers, and it helped them win a Super Bowl. This year's Packer team has as much chance of winning the Super Bowl as Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes has of getting a job at a gas station.
So why add Koren Robinson and trade away Samkon Gado? Gado was well-liked by fans and teammates. He enjoyed a reputation for being polite and a hard worker. In the end, you keep players based on talent. But it takes the tinnest of ears to add a deeply troubled Robinson while trading away the respected Gado.
So, I understand winning at all costs. But if you're going to lose, try to lose with some class.
